THE PSYCHOSOMATIC WORD EFFECT:

Here is another startling effect that your prose can have on any reader...and it is the Mind/Body interaction between your reader and words you string together.

THIS is where the art and science of your word-craft gets put to the ultimate test: Will what you write reach in far enough, fast enough...to INFLUENCE the reader to stick around for the next sentence?

SOME words will actually make people feel worse, and people will display symptoms of being sluggish and tired...just from reading a specific group of words!

There are a set of CLASSIC experiments that illustrate this effect of YOUR choice of words that YOU use.

Dr. John Bargh has been using the link between words and behaviour to study how you can be manipulated to make decisions...at the core level of your body/mind relationship.

In one study, subjects were asked to describe how they felt...and then given a group of words to read:

• Florida
• old
• wrinkle
• worried
• lonely
• forgetful
• bingo
• retired
• withdraw
• sentimental
• grey

This process is termed “Priming” in the game of psychology...and in HYPNOSIS...it's called: EMBEDDING A COMMAND!

The result of the test?

People who read the list of words report that they feel more sluggish than before they read the list of words...and NOT ONLY that...they also moved SLOWER when they walked out of the test than when they entered the test.

Now...a word of caution...NOT all of these experiments have been able to be replicated consistently by other researchers. BUT...more often than not...these experiments stand the test of independent research.

The effects are NOT always consistent...but are consistent enough to mean that you better pay attention to the words you smack down with your keyboard.

Words ARE power-tools!

So...figure out which words work to help you connect with real people.
